A survey is the process of identifying the boundary lines of a parcel of land. The result of a survey is a diagram of the land that shows its exact boundary lines, along with where structures sit on the parcel. A survey will also show the parcel’s relationship to surrounding land and structures.

Surveys are carried out by licensed surveyors and often used in the process of purchasing real estate. A survey can identify exactly where the lot lines are, note any easements or rights-of-way on the property and identify neighboring structures that potentially encroach on the land. Surveys are also used in the construction of new homes to determine the boundaries of the lot and determine exact placement of the new home on the land.
