How do I check a home for asbestos? findwell agent Matt Martel answers in this installment of Ask an Agent.

Q: How do I check for asbestos?

So if you think your home has asbestos in it, the home that you’re planning to purchase, to test for it, say for example it has popcorn ceilings, you would need to take a sample of that popcorn ceiling and bring it to a lab. There’s a number of labs in the area that will test it for you for about $30. It will take about 2 days and they will tell you if you have asbestos or not. But you need to bring a sample of the material that you suspect has the asbestos in it.

Q: If I find asbestos, should I be concerned?

Generally speaking, we only are concerned about asbestos if it’s airborne. So if it’s in the flooring, it’s not airborne, it’s probably fine. The only time it might become a danger to you is when you’re doing some work on the home and you start to remove the material and the asbestos fibers become airborne. In which case you would need to take all of the proper precautions to make sure you’re not inhaling that or better yet, hire a professional to do that work for you.
